Over the past four years, researchers in the Netherlands have secured more than € 1 billion for fundamental research through the European Research Council. This is according to new calculations by the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland, published recently.
Part of the Horizon Europe programme
The funding went to research carried out under the Horizon Europe programme, which runs until 2027. It allows researchers in the Netherlands to carry out projects, which could lead to major scientific breakthroughs.
For example, research from which better ways to fight cancer have emerged. Research that has given us insight into how brains make decisions. Currently, a technology is being developed to help blind people see again. People may get their sight back artificially through a brain implant. The Horizon Europe programme supports the whole journey, from wild idea to commercial application and societal impact.
The importance of European funding
The European investment in research is essential to bring good new ideas to fruition. Especially in times of national cutbacks. The Horizon Europe programme expires in 2027, but a successor is expected. The European Commission is expected to announce plans for a new European programme for the period 2028-2034 shortly.
