The 2025 call for ERC Advanced Grants resulted in an € 838 million funding, supporting 319 leading researchers across Europe. With the grants, these senior researchers have the opportunity to pursue ambitious, curiosity-driven projects that could lead to major scientific breakthroughs.

Great results for the Netherlands

If we look at the countries with the highest number of grantees, the Netherlands ranks sixth with 22 grantees, after the UK (62), Germany (46), Switzerland (32), Spain (29) and France (26). The funded researchers are working at several Dutch Universities and medical centers such as the University of Utrecht, Technical University of Delft, University of Twente, Technical University of Eindhoven, Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. If we look at the number of grantees with a Dutch nationality, we drop one place, to 7th, with sixteen grantees. Still great results!

Wide range of subjects

The new research will cover a wide rage of subjects. To give a few examples:

  • Investigating people’s varying vulnerability to drug addiction
  • Extending women’s fertility and health
  • Exploring the brain mechanics behind stuttering
  • Developing new mathematical and algorithmic tools to tackle the growing complexity of large-scale networks
