Children

Children can be quite expensive. You need to think about schools, childcare, sports, insurances. We have categorised the costs below.

Dutch primary school  

  • Primary and secondary schools in the Netherlands do not have tuition fees.  
  • Parental (voluntary) contributions may be required to cover activities such as excursions, school trips, swimming lessons etc.
    • Good to know: swimming lessons can be included in the school plan, but a lot of schools do not offer that anymore. So you will need to arrange that yourselves.

International school in the Netherlands  

  • State-funded international schools charge between € 4.500 – € 9.000 per year
  • Private international schools charge between € 18.000 – € 30.000+ per year

Sports 

This includes membership, clothing, shoes, etc.

  • Soccer: around € 458 per year
  • Ballet: € 200 per year  
  • Hockey: € 300 per year  
  • Athletics: € 350 per year  
  • Horse riding: € 810 per year  
  • Gymnastics: € 235 per year

Child Insurance, Childcare, Childcare and child benefit  

  • Insurance: Children under 18 do require Basic Health Insurance but can be registered free of charge under the policy of one of their parents.  
  • Childcare costs: € 10 – 14 per hour  
    • You can receive childcare benefit (Kinderopvangtoeslag) up to 2760 hours per year. This is max. 230 hours per month.
    • The childcare benefits depend on the income, the number of children and type of childcare.
