07 Jul 2009

Like much of Europe, taxes in the Netherlands are high compared to many other places. Taxrates on salaries start from 33% and can go up to the maximum of 52%. Part of these taxes consist of social security premiums. Next to tax on salary there are other types of taxes. Here you can read more about the taxation system in Holland.

In the Netherlands there are different types of taxes an individual may have to pay: income tax, wage tax, corporate income, dividend withholding tax, inheritance and gift tax, value-added tax (BTW), motor vehicle tax, environmental taxes and local taxes. Here only the most common will be discussed.

Income tax / wage tax

Income tax is a tax on all the income you receive which is valid for taxation in the Netherlands. Wage tax is a part of this income tax, namely the tax on your income which you receive as a salary. If your only income is your salary, than you will only have to pay your wage tax.
