When you come to the Netherlands you will encounter the Dutch taxation system, for example through your payslip (brutto versus netto), when you buy anything (VAT) or when you own a car. Furthermore information is provided on the unique identification numbers for citizens when in contact with the government (BSN, sofinumber and DigiD).

Like much of Europe, taxes in the Netherlands are high compared to many other places. However, this holds the advantage that residents receive many types of support (such as Social Security, pensions, subsidized health care) from the government, which are paid through those taxes.
