There are 14 research universities in the Netherlands. Universities have three tasks: providing education, conducting (fundamental and applied) research, and stimulating knowledge transfer.
The 14 Dutch research universities include:

Linked to the universities are a number of medical centres:

- Erasmus MC (Erasmus University Rotterdam)
- Leiden University Medical Center (Leiden University)
- UMC Utrecht (University of Utrecht)
- University Medical Center Groningen University of Groningen)
- University Medical Center Nijmegen (University of Nijmegen)
- VU Medical Centre (VU University Amsterdam)
- Medical Centre Maastricht (University of Maastricht, in Dutch only)
Furthermore each university has a number of research institutions.
