The Blue Card: your entry pass to the European labour market?
A European blue card as the counterpart for the American Green Card: it sounded so attractive when the term was first introduced a couple of years ago. As if the holder of a Blue Card could freely move within the European Union to live and work there. The reality is slightly different. However, there may still be some advantages that could be of interest to you. On 19 June the EU Blue Card was implemented into Dutch law, so you can now apply for it at the Immigration and Naturalisation Service. We have outlined whether this entry pass to the European labour market is suitable for you.
Did you receive a letter from the CVZ?
A lot of people in the Netherlands who do not have Dutch basic healthcare insurance have received or will receive a letter from the College van Zorgverzekeringen (CVZ) this year. The letter states that according to Dutch law they will have to take out Dutch public healthcare insurance (basiszorgverzekering) immediately. Most likely this letter will also be sent to international researchers and knowledge migrants. If you receive this letter, it is important that you take action.
Holiday? Make sure you can come back!
You have applied for a residence permit or an extension of your residence permit, but your permit has not yet been issued. However, you have planned to go on a holiday to visit your family. If you leave now, how can you be sure that you can enter the country again? In certain cases a return visa (in Dutch: terugkeervisum) can help you out. Make sure you don't leave unprepared!
Facebook for scientists
What would you do if your research threatens to stall because you cannot find the answer to a burning question? You can submit your question to ResearchGATE.net, a social network like Facebook, that is only for researchers.

Calls open for Marie Curie scholarships
With the People programme, the European Commission intends to develop the research skills of researchers, stimulate knowledge transfer and improve career prospects for European researchers. This is all accomplished through international research scholarships or exchange schemes with knowledge institutions or companies.
Column: Kladderadatsch
A long-forgotten German word has recently started to re-emerge from the mists of time. It’s a beautiful, long and alliterative word that’s not that hard to pronounce. That’s why we should embrace it as part of our common lexicon, the vocabulary used by the scientific nomads and vagrants who find a home away from home in our labs and libraries. The word is Kladderadatsch.
