Language courses

21 May 2009

As a foreign researcher coming to the Netherlands, you will probably work in an entirely English speaking environment. This does not mean that you do not need to learn Dutch, however. Although you will interact primarily with other internationals, knowledge of the Dutch language is essential in daily life.

The idea that the Dutch culture is an English-speaking culture is much exaggerated. For example, you might be perfectly able to have an animated discussion with your neighbour in English, or ask in English at the supermarket where to find the milk, and get an answer in English. But when it comes to filling in official forms and documents (e.g. for housing, banking, insurance schemes and social activities) English will probably not get you very far.

A whole range of different Dutch courses exists. There are cheap and expensive courses. Some courses might take a few weeks, while others will take a few years. Your employer might assist you in finding an appropriate course. In some cases, your employer may even offer you free or reduced-rate Dutch courses in-house. It is worthwhile asking your employer about the options available.
