Rubbish collection
In the Netherlands there is a highly organised system for collecting rubbish, to which you are supposed to comply. When you do not follow the rules you might get angry looks from your neighbours or worse, you might receive a fine of upto 60 euros!
In order to understand what you are supposed to comply with we provide you with a few rubbish-collection-principles.
1. You are only allowed to offer your rubbish for collection on the days appointed by the local authorities, and only within the given timeframe. For example in the centre of Utrecht you are only allowed to place your rubbish outside between 21:00 - 08:00 of the designated day. Contact your local authority about these dates, or ask your neighbours.
When you place your rubbish outside on non-assigned days, the local police might fine you. In most cities they are very quick in finding your outside-hours-rubbish-bag.
2. You are supposed to offer you rubbish in specific rubbish-bags. If you do not comply to these rules the rubbish-collectors are likely not to accept it. In other words, they might leave your rubbish where you put it, again with the risk of receiving a fine. We advise you to buy rubbish-bags at your local supermarket, for example of the brand KOMO.
3. In The Netherlands they love to seperate their rubbish. In most neighbourhoods you can offer your organic rubbish, so called GFT (Vegetables-, Fruit-, and Gardenrubbish), for collection. Depending on the city and neighbourhood you live in, this might be on the same day as the ordinary rubbish-collection, or on another day. Again we advise you to ask your local council for information, or ask your neighbours about the schedule.
4. You can also seperately hand in your old paper, your glass (bottles, jars, glasses, etc.) and your old clothes. In most cases there are specific containers in your neighbourhood for the collection of these items. Again your local council or your neighbours might provide you with information.
