European Research Council (ERC)

Starting Indepent Research Grant

ERC Starting Grants aim to support young, up-and-coming researchers who are about to establish or consolidate an independent research team or to start conducting independent research in Europe. The scheme targets young researchers who have the proven potential of becoming independent research leaders. The grants amount up to 400,000 Euro per year for a period of up to five years
For more information, please see the ERC website and the calls page for information about the submission of proposals.

Advanced Investigator Grant

This funding scheme, which offers grants of up to 500,000 Euro per year for a period of up to five years, targets researchers who have already established themselves as being scientifically independent and world-class leaders in their own right.
For more information, please see the ERC website. For more information about the submission of proposals, please see the call page.

Foundation of Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM)

The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) promotes, co-ordinates and finances fundamental physics research in The Netherlands. It is an autonomous foundation responsible to the physics division of the national research council NWO. Its annual budget is 80 million euros.
FOM employs about 1000 people, of who about 420 are PhD students and 120 are postdocs. They work at FOM research institutes and in university laboratories. The foundation also finances and operates a number of research facilities at and in collaboration with universities.
FOM finances research through several mechanisms. For more information please click here (in Dutch language only, FOM works on an English translation). Only little information is provided in English, but perhaps this might be worth checking out.

Fulbright Fellowships

The Fulbright Center  provides information on study, research and internships in the United States of America and promotes the exchange of students, scholars and teachers between the Netherlands and the United States.

Fulbright-Schuman Program

Funding is available for American and European researchers, lecturers, international educators, and graduate students to focus on a wide range of issues concerning the European Union and the U.S.-EU relationship.

KNAW- Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences

The Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences:

  • Awards grants for research, conference visits or periods of residence abroad;
  • Contributes to the cost of organising international conferences, workshops and colloquia in the Netherlands;
  • Promotes international communication and partnerships.

Please visit the KNAW-website for more information.

Mandela Scholarship Fund of Leiden University

This fund aspires to give South African (post) graduate students the possibility to study for a period of a year at Leiden University.

Marie Curie actions

- Initial Training Networks (ITN)

This action aims to improve early-stage researchers' career prospects in both the public and private sectors, thereby making research careers more attractive to young people. The action will be implemented by supporting competitively selected networks of organisations from different countries engaged in research training. In these networks, early postdoc’s (up to 1 year after PhD) may also be recruited.

The action is open to researchers from all countries. Researchers are normally required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up appointment.

Researchers can not directly apply for funding. However, funded ITN's will recruit researchers. Vacancies can be found on the on the Marie Curie website.

- Marie Curie Industry- Academia Partnerships & Pathways

This action seeks to open and foster dynamic pathways between public research organisations and private commercial enterprises. Funding will be provided for the exchange of knowledge between staff members of the two sectors.

Public research organisations and private commercial enterprises may exchange their own staff members, but may also recruit experienced researchers from outside the partnership for involvement in transfer of knowledge and/or in the training of researchers.

Researchers can not apply directly for funding through the IAPP scheme. However, vacancies in IAPP's will be published on the Marie Curie website.

- Incoming International Fellowship (IIF)

This action is open to experienced researchers from third countries. It provides financial support to individual research projects presented by the incoming experienced researchers in liaison with a legal entity ('host organisation') in a Member State or an Associated country, as well as possibly a 'return host organisation' if the researcher's country or origin is an International Cooperation Partner Country.

Please have a look at the Marie Curie website for more information and at the calls page for information about the submission of calls.

- Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (IEF)

This action provides financial support for advanced training and trans-national mobility, for a period of 12-24 months (full-time equivalent), for individual projects presented by experienced researchers in liaison with a host organisation in a EU Member State or Associated Country.
As a general rule, researchers must move country.
Please have a look at the Marie Curie website for more information and at the calls page for information about the submission.

- Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant (IRG)

This action provides financial support for a period 2 to 4 years, for individual projects presented by experienced researchers in liaison with a legal entity ('host organisation') in a Member State or an Associated country.
Researchers must have been active in research in a third country for at least three years.
Please have a look at the Marie Curie website for more information and at the calls page for information about the submission of calls.

- Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant (ERG)

This action offers the opportunity for experienced researchers for Member States or Associated countries to capitalise on their transnational mobility period after having participated in a Marie-Curie action either under the Seventh or the previous Framework Programme.
Participating researchers must be nationals of a Member State or Associated country benefiting at the time of application or having previously benefited or a training and mobility action under the Seventh or the Sixth Framework Programme of at least 18 months full-time equivalent.
Please have a look at the Marie Curie website for more information and at the calls page for information about the submission of calls.

Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP)

Programmes (NFP) are demand-oriented fellowship programmes designed to foster institutional development. The NFP target group consists of mid-career professionals who are already in employment and who are nationals of one of 57 selected countries. The NFP are focused on meeting the need for further training and capacity-building in developing countries. To maximize the fellowships'' impact on capacity-building, NFP-funded training must be linked to the institutional development of organizations.
Please see the NFP-website for more details.

NWO – Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research

NWO promotes scientific research at Dutch universities and institutes through nearly 170 different research programmes and grants.
Researchers can apply for subsidies within research programmes as defined by NWO or as part of an Open Competition (research object is put forward by the researcher). Personal grants (like the well-known Vernieuwingsimpuls) stimulate individual researchers. Other subsidies facilitate (international) cooperation, finance the use of large-scale facilities and enable investments or publications.

More information may be found on the NWO website .

SANPAD South-Africa- Netherlands Research Programme

SANPAD offers funding for high-quality, collaborative research by South African researchers in association with Netherlands researchers. All employees of the academic and research community of public higher education institutions in South Africa are eligible to apply for funds from the Programme. The project leader and the project team members must be South African nationals and must be employed by a South African university or technikon. Members of the South African National Board and its sub-committees are not eligible to apply for funds for the period of their term of office.
