Work permits

05 Jun 2009

Depending on your nationality or the purpose of your stay, a work permit might be required for you. In this section you can read up on work permits and, perhaps more interestingly, whether you may be exempt from this requirement.

When coming to the Netherlands to work, the general rule is that the employer will have to apply for a work permit for you if you do not have the nationality of an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland. However, since the Dutch government wants to stimulate its ‘knowledge economy’, scientific researchers are often exempt from this requirement.

Finding your way

You may want to start with checking the section on exemptions. You could also go directly to our overview of purposes of stay to find out if you fit one of these exceptions, before starting to read about work permits.

If you are accompanied by your partner, you might be interested in reading about your partner's position on the Dutch labour market. Finally, we have included a section on having a second job alongside your research or teaching tasks.
