Bulgaria and Romania

11 May 2009

This page contains general information on immigration procedures and work permits for Bulgarian and Romanian nationals.

Entry visa

You do not need an entry visa for the Netherlands. All you need is a valid passport. You may travel through all EU member states freely.

Formalities upon arrival

Staying less than 4 months
There is nothing you need to do.

Staying longer than 4 months
You are required to register at your local municipality.
In that case, you may also apply for a residence permit. This is not compulsory, but advisable nevertheless.

Work permits

Although Bulgaria and Romania are EU member states, nationals of these countries are not yet free on the Dutch labour market. This means that for the first 12 months you need a work permit to work in the Netherlands. However, depending on the exact purpose of your stay in the Netherlands and your terms of contract, you may be exempted from this requirement.
