During & after

19 May 2009

This page contains information on the conditions during your stay, and what will happen at the end of the orientation year period.

Work permit

With a residence permit for the purpose of ‘orientation year for highly educated migrant seeking employment’ you are not free to take up paid (or unpaid) employment.
Your employer will have to apply for a work permit, which may not always be easy. One of the conditions that the employer will have to meet, is to demonstrate that there are no workers with an EU/EEA nationality available and capable to do the job.
You are not allowed to apply for any state benefits. If you do apply, your residence permit may be revoked.

No extension possible

At the end of the year, your residence permit for the purpose of ‘orientation year for highly educated migrant seeking employment’ cannot be extended. This means that you must apply for a change of purpose, or leave the country.
If you succeed in finding a job as a highly skilled migrant, your employer will most likely assist you in applying for your change of purpose.
You can also apply for a change to another purpose of stay, such as ‘labour migrant’ or ‘stay with partner’. This implies that you meet the criteria for that particular purpose of stay. This may not always be easy.
