Tuberculosis examination

13 May 2009

This page contains information on the tuberculosis (TB) examination which is required for many nationalities. During this examination an X-ray of your lungs will be taken.

Exemptions
You will only be granted a residence permit only if you are willing to undergo a tuberculosis examination and have medical treatment, if necessary. You are exempt from this requirement if:

  • You are a national of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Surinam, Switzerland, the United States or an EU or EEA member state
  • You have a valid residence permit for another EU or EEA member state or Switzerland or a long-term resident's EC residence permit issued by another EU member state, or if you are a family member of someone who does hold this document and you have already been admitted to another EU member state as the family member of the long-term resident
  • You were born in the Netherlands

All others must express their willingness to undergo a TB examination by signing a “declaration of intent”. This declaration is included in the application form for a residence permit. If you are granted a residence permit, this will be on the condition that you have a TB examination within three months of the date of issue of the permit.

Where to go
The TB examination will be performed by the Municipal Health Service (in Dutch: Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst, abbreviated to "GGD"). Please ask your employer for contact details as the GGD’s national website is available only in Dutch.

Referral form
You must bring a “tuberculosis examination referral form” with you. This form is part of the residence permit application form.
