IND registration for EU citizens

13 May 2009

As an EU/EEA or Swiss national (except Bulgarians and Romanians), you cannot apply for a residence permit. However, you do need to register with IND (the Dutch immigration authorities) free of charge. Although there are no sanctions applicable if you do not register, you are advised to do so as this may be useful in a number of situations.

Where and when do I register?

The registration takes place at your regional IND desk by appointment only. Please call IND at 0900-1234561 to schedule an appointment. Before registering with IND, you must register with your local municipality first.

What do I need to bring?

After you have made the appointment, you will be sent an application form by post. You must complete this form and bring it along to the appointment. The registration for EU/EEA citizens is free of charge.

You must also bring the following documents:

  • Documents to support your purpose of stay, such as an employer’s declaration confirming the  terms of your contract. A standard employer’s declaration is included in the application form that you will be sent.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means, such as a mention of your salary in the employer’s declaration.
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Passport or European identity card

Proof of registration

A sticker will be placed in your passport as proof of your registration with IND. This sticker remains valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Netherlands. There is no need to extend or renew this sticker.

Am I obliged to register?

No, but it might be handy at some point during your stay. You may for example be asked to demonstrate proof of registration when taking out Dutch public healthcare insurance, a healthcare-, housing- or childcare allowance, a mortgage, or a phone subscription.
