EU, EEA & Swiss nationals

12 May 2009

This page contains information on formalities to take care of if you are a national of an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland.

Procedures for nationals of EU/EEA member states and Switzerland are fairly simple. You are free to live and work in the Netherlands. This means that you do not need an entry visa or a residence permit. A work permit is not required either.

There are, however, some other procedures that apply to EU/EEA and Swiss nationals.

All EU/EEA and Swiss citizens (except Bulgarians and Romanians)

If you intend to stay for over 4 months, you are required to register at your local municipality.

If you intend to stay for over 4 months, you may also register with the immigration authorities. This is not compulsory, but advisable nevertheless.

Bulgarian and Romanian citizens

You may apply for a residence permit (“verification against EU community law”). This is not compulsory, but advisable nevertheless.

If you intend to stay for over 4 months, you are required to register at your local municipality.
