Visa & residence permits

11 May 2009

Depending on your nationality and duration of stay, you may be required to obtain an entry visa and/or residence permit to enter the Netherlands. There may also be some formalities on arrival.

In this section, you will find all the information you need to determine which procedures apply to you. Do not be put off by the need for an entry visa. Your Dutch employer or host institution will usually deal with a lot of the paperwork.

Finding your way

You could start navigating by having a look at our visa wizard. This will tell you what is necessary for someone with your nationality. Alternatively, our sections on short stays and long stays might be good starting points.

Already know what you need?

Perhaps you already know what you need. If you are only coming over for a short trip, read up on the Schengen visa and reporting to the Aliens Police.

If you are going to live here for a while, you may want to visit our pages on the provisional residence permit (MVV) and residence permit.

In the long stay section you will also find information on the town hall registration upon arrival, and on the return visa. Finally, you can read up on the admission scheme for highly educated persons (which is a job search period for MA and PhD grads) and on bringing family.
